LEGACY REEFS

 Portal to Partnership

Leaving a legacy means making a lasting impact, whether through actions, values, or contributions,
that outlive you, shaping the world and those around you.

Its about making a positive difference in the World and leaving a mark that resonates with others.

Through reef sponsoring not only will you make a difference for marine life, but you will also be

partnering with this Trust, its Trustees,  a trained contracted reef builder and others.

Whether you are a business identity looking to sponsor an ecological effort

or an individual looking to leave a legacy,

here is a portal that can take you to partner with others to help shape a richer meaningful World.

The Vision

Opotiki is a small regional East Coast New Zealand township by the sea. The concept of a 'Community Reef' offering good fishing very close to the new Harbor entrance is well received by locals.

A Community Reef offers many benefits; marine life diversity, greater fish abundance, petrol savings, food security and healthy organic cholesterol free protein.

The model and principles that are being applied here could foreseably be applied in any community in NZ.

Along with naming rights, local and internet publicity,  your Legacy Reef would be built, deployed, charted, surveyed and become part of this pioneering marine project.

Connections

Building connections and stories is an integral part of community reef building.  Your sponsorship of a reef also allows for a disadvantaged person to gain the skills of reef module building and positive outlook that must accompany its construction.  It allows for connection via expressions through art to be embedded into the reef modules.  Such etherial connections are viewed as essential elements that help make your reef so valuable.

Human wellbeing is also an integral part of our Mission statement to -'Enhancing Marine Life and Human Wellbeing'.

Practicalities

Firstly its important to note that your 'sponsoring purchase' of a Legacy Reef is made from a registered charitable Trust 'Opotiki Community REAF Trust'. As such your funds are held in Trust, only paid out on completion of the steps in reef building, and it's all totally  tax deductible for you.

This also offers you a protection in that your sponsored reef is under the Community Reef Resource Consent and as such you bear no personal liability should any issues arise.

Your sponsorship purchase goes to cover

  • an initial sales commission

  • a contribution to Resource Consent costs

and ongoing annual monitoring and reports

  • ongoing reef research and development costs

  • OCRTrust administrative costs

  • contribution to salary of a facilitating manager

  • community education on reef philosophy and use

  • education, training and personal growth assessments of independent reef building contractor

  • payments to the independent reef construction contractor to cover yard usage, labour, materials, art and machinery costs

  • palletised reef module hi-ab transport to wharf and

    barge deployment costs as applicable

  • photography, GPS location, charting, Certification and recording of YOUR NAMED LEGACY REEF

At all times the OCRTrust remains the overseer to building your Legacy Reef and your first port of contact.
The Trust office is physically located next to the Opotiki Wharf.

Your Legacy Reef

Photos of your named reef's progress, certification of its location, and pictures of its deployment will be supplied.

Legacy Reefs colonise quite quickly, a year from deployment you can expect marine life to be encrusting all the reef.

Some settlement is expected and allowed for with the supporting untreated wood pallets expected to both settle into the mud silt seabed and also for them to act as anchors for the structure.
Further Reef modules can be added at any time.  Even small easily cast modules added to the cluster on a fishing trip will help keep its 'mauri' or 'life force' vital and active.
